A picture engineered as a rank order, read pre-semantically, confirms the rank and then exposes how it is built: the emperor's dominance is manufactured, not intrinsic. By structural mass Jahangir's body is only 1.9% of the frame by a strict mask (6.2% by a generous box that catches his cushion and seat), well under the Shaikh (9.5%) and the four-figure subordinate stack (~22%); the single heaviest figure-scale element in the work is his gold halo (12.5%), roughly six times his strict body (twice the generous box) and the largest under both value-mass and edge-mass, and he does not lead saliency (the high-contrast European faces outrank him at every tone curve tested). His grip on the composition is his attribute, his scale, and his position as the relational anchor, not bodily weight: the title Jahangir ("Seizer of the World") made structural, a World-Seizer who seizes nothing terrestrial. Pushed on the reading, the instrument then showed its own limit. It measures correctly where weight and salience sit, but its accent lens returned accents=1 and it did not surface what a viewer reads at once: a near-neutral white armature that leans left and anchors on the Shaikh, and the emperor tonally dissolving into his gold (figure-ground contrast ~0.01 against ~0.03 for the popping subordinates). A new call-site lens (C-13, tonal_armature) was built to read that structure and validated against a control. The transferable finding is not "gold halos manufacture dominance"; it is that aggregate mass/saliency fields are right about where weight sits and silent about how elements interact, and here is a lens that starts to close that gap. All four pre-registered hypotheses are now run and pressure-tested, and they share one shape, the study's meta-finding: every hypothesis confirmed its phenomenon and corrected its metric. Dominance is manufactured (real) but the density inversion is marginal, not dramatic; the halo is worked (real) but worked is not the same as contrasting; the Holbein-inverse is real but it is relief-vs-pattern, not tonal-vs-chroma; the strata are different regimes (real) but the split is figure-vs-ornament, not datable. Four real bets; in every one the eye-first reading held and the first tidy metric did not. The critique is still to be written; nothing here is promoted to the instrument's numbered findings yet.

Entry 01 — Selection, source & the contested inclusion decision

What is Bichitr's, and what is a later century's

The brief: open two regimes the corpus had not read. A new culture and medium (the first Mughal miniature, opaque watercolour and gold on paper) and a picture engineered around hierarchy, whose patron's programme is a rank order, which makes it the cleanest available test of the subject-weight thesis carried since Gauguin (Study 14) and Jeong Seon (Study 15). Bichitr, a Hindu painter in Jahangir's atelier, painted it c.1615–18; it survives as a dispersed folio of the St. Petersburg Album, looted from the Mughal library in Nadir Shah's 1739 invasion and remounted in Tehran.

The pinned primary plate: the painting rectangle (RP crop 5_frame, 1346×1892), cropped inside the couplet cartouches and the album border. Bichitr's scene: the gold sun-and-moon halo, Jahangir on the hourglass throne, the Shaikh receiving the book, the Ottoman, James I and Bichitr's own self-portrait stacked at the left, the flat lapis carpet, four putti.

The inclusion decision is the study's opening call, and it is not clean. A first framing called it an "inverted Jeong Seon" (there the inscription is the artist's own, included; here the text a later hand, excluded). That was retracted: a specialist source already in hand (Weekes, Courtauld) calls the couplets "contemporary," and RP's research concurs. The honest position is a three-layer stratigraphy with one contested seam.

Layer A — Bichitr's painted scene (c.1615–18). Uncontested; the work's core, and the primary read (5_frame).   Layer B — the couplet cartouches + inner border. Contested date (Weekes: contemporary; Wikipedia: later); assert neither.   Layer C — the outer gold-and-floral margin. Certain later stratum (Muhammad Sadiq, 1747–48). RP cut a crop ladder (5_frame1_frame) that peels the strata apart by subtraction, so no provenance call is forced onto the instrument. This ladder is H4 (Entry 09): the subtraction ran, and it confirmed A is a focal figure and B/C are ornament, but it declined to date Layer B (B resembles C because both are ornament, which is orthogonal to date). The "softer Jeong Seon contrast" stays a reading from the provenance record; the structure does not break the contested-date tie.

Entry 02 — Eye-first reading & the four pre-registered hypotheses

Words before numbers, and four bets the instrument could lose

Structural précis at the plate: an enormous gold disc upper-centre; the emperor enthroned before it at centre-right as the dominant single figure; a descending column of four diminishing subordinates down the left; a flat jewel-patterned carpet ground; a vertical hourglass spine to putti at the base; a pale, quiet sky above. Centred dominance with a left-weighted subordinate column. The scale gradient is the message. Four hypotheses were pre-registered before measuring:

Entry 03 — Run 1: the raw spine & the trust gate

The instrument reads the picture faithfully, and the finding is already visible

Raw read, no persistence, the painting crop (runs/run_read.py, core untouched). Kernel delta (+0.064, +0.226): the mass centroid sits low, not up at the halo; mu 0.884; mask_mode REGION_FIELD; tonal tau 0.630; Notan field_void 0.045, mass_fraction 0.955. Raw and edge-aware agree to three decimals (the crop is clean, I-1 not triggered); PM verdict "meaningful" but the kernel is robust to it.

The island readout. Node 14 (anchor) sits on the emperor: he is the relational hub, strong conduits radiating to every figure and throne element below. But the mass-centre (orange cross) sits LOW at the throne/hourglass, well below him. The gold halo interior reads as a smooth, low-density field (dark in the density heatmap); only its rim and sun-burst fire as edges. The carpet fires as pattern, not as a mass.
Trust gate: pass. Emperor found as the anchor; halo as a smooth field with a worked sun-burst; carpet as pattern; left figures as satellites; and the lapis sky reads as a worked field, not a void (field_void 0.045), confirming the Step-0 guard. Two independent channels, structural mass (delta_y +0.226) and bottom-up saliency (saliency_dy +0.196), both point down, into the dense lower register, while the emperor sits high as anchor. The H1(b) branch is already registering.

Entry 04 — H1: hierarchy-as-mass (the World-Seizer, measured)

The rank is confirmed; the way it is built is the finding

Per-figure Notan mass (painter's mass) and spectral saliency integrated over region masks (runs/run_h1_hierarchy.py); massDens is a region's mass-share divided by its area-share (1.0 = frame-average density). Regions are approximate; the claims rest on orderings and the halo's role, and the density result was re-checked on figure-only pixels.

Branch (a) falsified. Jahangir's body does not out-mass the field: 6.2% by a generous box, and only 1.9% by a strict body mask (cushion, gold and ground removed), against the Shaikh (9.5%) and the stack (~22%). By density he is the lowest figure, though the margin is marginal under the strict mask (~1.0 vs subordinates 1.06–1.44; the earlier 0.84 was box-inflated by low-density cushion and sky). By saliency his body is mid-pack, below the European faces at every tone curve tested (a gamma sweep leaves his rank at 3 of 4), and the halo is the least salient region (0.40). He leads no bottom-up substance channel.
Branch (b) confirmed. The halo alone (Notan value-mass 12.5%, edge-mass 9.3%) carries ~6.5× his strict body (2× the generous box) under both definitions, and more than any single figure: the heaviest figure-scale element is his attribute. Zeroing the halo drops the mass centroid further down (dy +0.079 → +0.127), so the attribute is the only thing holding weight up top. Dominance is manufactured, by the gold, by scale, and by his position as the anchor/hub. This is Jahangir ("Seizer of the World") made structural: a World-Seizer whose grip is cosmic attribute and hierarchy, not bodily weight. A quiet corollary, held soft: Bichitr, lowest in rank, is the densest figure (1.44), a structural echo of the "lowest servant, ultimate author" reading (consistent with, not proof of).

Entry 05 — Adversarial re-check (the rug, the whites, the dissolve)

Pushed on the reading, three of RP's eye-first calls beat the aggregate fields

RP pushed back: the rug may be a strong pull; the whites may be the structural mover; the emperor tonally disappears into the gold; and the accent/island layer may not understand these interactions. Each was tested (runs/run_h1_adversarial.py).

The rug is a chroma pull, not the massValue-only Notan mass is more bottom-heavy, not less (dy +0.079 → +0.127); the lapis is ~4–5% of total mass. The bottom-heaviness is value structure (hourglass, dark putti-oval, throne, figures), not the rug's colour. The rug is a perceptual pull the fields under-weight.
The whites are a real, left-anchored armatureWhites (L>0.78) are 1% of area but their centroid sits hard left (dx −0.14), peaking on the Shaikh (30.5% of all white). A bilateral tension the single mass-centroid hides: whites pull left, mass and gold pull right. The anchor is robust: removing the halo rim leaves the largest white component on the Shaikh.
The emperor tonally dissolves into the goldFigure-ground contrast, H1 region-mask: emperor vs gold 0.010 (~zero) against Shaikh 0.031 and James 0.034 (~3×). His body is camouflaged into his own attribute, a sharper mechanism than the density point. (The C-13 plateau measure of the same phenomenon gives 0.008; Entry 06.)
The saliency null is tone-curve robustAcross a gamma sweep (0.7–1.5) the emperor holds rank 3 of 4: the European faces outrank him at every tone curve, the Shaikh sits below. So the low salience is not an artifact of this plate's tone response, though it is still one digital plate with a model-free saliency (suggestive, not settled perception).
H1 reframed, honestly. The robust aggregate core stands (the emperor leads no bottom-up substance channel). The mechanism is sharpened to tonal dissolution; a left, Shaikh-anchored white armature is added; the density inversion is de-emphasised in favour of the perceptually dominant fact (total mass and whites both climb the left stack to the Shaikh). Two prose overclaims were caught in the pressure test and corrected here: the density margin (box-inflated) and "saliency privileges him nowhere" (he is mid-pack, not last). RP's caution is honoured: the "climbing stack" and "spreading frame" as authored devices are readings the instrument supports but cannot prove.

Entry 06 — The tonal-armature lens (candidate C-13)

Building the reading the instrument was missing, then testing that it discriminates

The accent lens returned accents=1: it had no grip on this picture's tonal organisation. So a bolt-on lens was written (toolkit/tonal_armature.py, core untouched, feeds nothing downstream) to read three things the accent lens does not: the near-neutral white armature (lean, elongation, anchor), the signed left/right tension between the white-centroid and the mass-centroid, and the dissolution plateau (the largest light region of low figure-ground contrast, a mass that melts into its ground).

It discriminates on the axes that matter: the light anchor is in a different place for each (a left figure, an upper-right void, a centred figure), and the tension is high for the two off-balance works but low for Klimt (whose whites and mass coincide). On dissolution Bichitr's emperor is the clear dissolver (0.008); Jeong Seon pops (0.035); Klimt's 0.023 leans pop but is only two-thirds of the way there (the dissolve/pop boundary sits near ~0.02), a clean separation from Bichitr on anchor and tension, a weak one on dissolve. The third row (Klimt) was run later as a deliberate predicted-null control; see the null-control entry. Two operationalizations, one phenomenon: this C-13 plateau measure (0.008) and the Entry-05 H1 region-mask ring (0.010) both report the emperor melting into the gold, at different scopes; the number should always name its subsystem.

Candidate instrument limitation (logged) — the study's transferable finding. On this work the composition layer (accent/island/scanpath) under-reads relational/tonal structure: a distributed tonal armature, figure-into-attribute dissolution, bilateral tonal tension, and dense chromatic-ornament pull. The aggregate mass and saliency fields are correct about where weight and salience sit; they are silent about how the elements interact. That is the lesson worth taking from this study, more than the halo result: not a fact about one painting but a boundary of the instrument, and a lens (C-13) that starts to close it. Candidate at n=1 (a discriminating pair), promotion pending ≥2 further works where a tonal armature or a figure-into-ground dissolution carries the composition.

Entry 07 — H2: the gold halo, reserved or worked?

Worked by coherence, flat by contrast, the two halves of the dissolve

The gold disc is ~84% flat burnished field carrying a coherent worked sun-burst (coherence 0.74 over the full band, 0.993 when the sun-burst is isolated, so the coherence is concentrated in the rays); open sky is 99.8% flat with zero coherent structure (coherence 0.000). The tool discriminates: two large uniform-ish fields, but only the halo carries coherent worked form.

Worked ≠ contrast (a reading corrected to a measurement). A first draft claimed the sun-burst was spatially disjoint from the face. Measured, that fails: the rays radiate from a ring around the head. The truer relation is sharper. The sun-burst is worked by coherence of form (0.993) but only 0.021 darker than the flat gold, gold-on-gold, the whole gold field spanning ~0.10 in luminance. So the halo modulates form without creating figure-ground contrast, and the emperor dissolves (H1) because the entire gold field, sun-burst included, is one narrow low-contrast band. Worked-by-coherence is not tonal-contrast: that reconciles H2 and H1, and it bounds what void_typology measures. Scope note for C-11: on an opaque medium "reserved" means flat, not untouched paper; this is the tool's first opaque pole, a scope expansion with that boundary condition.

Entry 08 — H3: the Holbein-inverse (modelled faces, flat carpet)

The phenomenon holds; the metric I predicted was wrong

Per-region construction split, faces vs carpet. Confirmed: faces carry ~1.6× the smooth modelling relief of the carpet (0.094 vs 0.058), and the carpet carries ~2.6× the high-frequency chroma pattern of the faces (0.057 vs 0.022). Smoothly modelled figures on a busy, non-recessive ornamental ground, the Holbein-inverse Weekes describes, measured.

Metric corrected. I predicted the carpet would be chroma-built and collapse in grayscale while faces stay tonal. It does not: faces 0.74 vs carpet 0.71 tonal-survival are near-equal (a 0.03 gap, within measurement noise at this crop scale, which is why the prediction is withdrawn, not weakly confirmed), because gold-vs-lapis is itself a value contrast, so the carpet survives desaturation like the faces. "Flat chroma pattern that collapses in grayscale" is withdrawn; the real split is relief-vs-pattern, not tonal-vs-chroma survival.
Sub-finding, tied to H1 (held soft, C-1). The emperor's face has the lowest relief of every face (0.033, roughly a third of the subordinates at 0.106–0.126): the least chiaroscuro-modelled, the flattest. It corroborates his tonal dissolve from a second, independent measure, and it is consistent with the idealised-divine-profile vs naturalistically-modelled-earthly-faces reading. Both measures are region-mask crops on one plate, so this is suggestive, not proof: the clean one-third ratio should keep that fence when it is quoted.

Entry 09 — H4: the strata (figure vs ornament), and a declined date

The instrument confirms the regime split and refuses the provenance call

The 5/3/1 crop ladder. Cumulative (whole-frame reads): as the decorative strata are added, cohesion collapses (mu 0.884 → 0.734 → 0.313) and off-centre mass symmetrises (|delta| 0.235 → 0.069). Isolated (A/B/C as separate zones): Layer A is focal (angular isotropy 0.62, low edge density), the ornamental bands are ring-like and edge-dense (B 0.85 / C 0.94 isotropy, ~1.4× A's edge density). Two structural regimes on one folio: figure vs ornament.

The intellectual high point: the instrument declines to date Layer B. B resembles C far more than A (combined distance ~4.4× closer to C). But this is a function similarity (ornamental band vs figural scene), which is orthogonal to date: a contemporary decorative border would read just as ring-like and edge-dense as a later one. So the structure cannot date Layer B, and B∼C is no evidence for "later" over "contemporary." The contested seam stays contested; measurement does not break the tie, exactly as pre-registered. (B and C are the same regime, ornament, distinguishable only weakly, on chroma 0.16 vs 0.22 and isotropy 0.85 vs 0.94, not the same stratum.) And what the instrument sees is figure-vs-ornament, not Mughal-vs-Persian: the empire narrative is provenance (C-1), not structure.

Entry 10 — Null control: is any of this just the image's statistics?

The core findings are compositional, not distributional

Every metric above is measured on the intact arrangement, so a hostile reader can ask whether any of it is just the picture's statistics. Two arrangement-destroying nulls answer it: block-shuffle (64px blocks permuted, preserves the histogram exactly) and phase-scramble (preserves the power spectrum). The spine re-run on each (n=3 seeds each, ±SD).

Compositional, not distributional. Mass cohesion (mu) collapses 0.884 → 0.23–0.36 under both nulls, and the off-centre hierarchy (|delta|) collapses to 0.025 under block-shuffle: destroy the arrangement while keeping the statistics and the cohesion and the hierarchy vanish. They require the intact composition. This underwrites the focal-field and H4 μ-collapse claims, and by extension the arrangement claims (the white armature, the figure-vs-ornament split). The purely distributional facts (the amount of gold, the tonal range) would survive a scramble by construction; the dissolve and the per-figure masses are local-adjacency claims that cannot even be computed on a scramble, which is the point. On sampling: n=3 is ample for the mu collapse (far larger than any seed variation), and the phase-scramble |delta| (0.224 ±0.20, an SD as large as the mean) is diagnostically under-sampled, the spread is itself the signature of a construction artifact, not a position signal, so the clean block-shuffle collapse is used instead.

The C-13 lens's arrangement claim was checked the same spirit, by prediction rather than scramble: run on a third work chosen to look different (Klimt's centred, popping Mäda Primavesi), it landed where predicted, centred anchor and low tension, moving C-13 to n=3 (Entry 06 table).

Entry 11 — The meta-finding

Every hypothesis confirmed its phenomenon and corrected its metric

Four pre-registered hypotheses, all run and pressure-tested. On this one folio, all four bets resolved the same way, and that consistency is the study's most transferable observation, a description of these four bets, not a law about the instrument.

In every one the phenomenon survived and the metric was corrected. Read narrowly, and that is the right way to read it, that is the mark of an honest eye-first reading on this work: the eye named real structure, the first metric for it was too tidy, and holding the instrument to measurement rather than to confirming the reading traded a clean claim for a true one. That all four resolved this way here is evidence the reading was honest, not a regularity the ISR guarantees, a study fitted to its own numbers would have no corrections to show. Whether the same pattern recurs on the next work is a question for the next work. The critique is to be written from this record; nothing here is promoted to the instrument's numbered findings yet.
