Work, tools and research this build used or learned from.
The paint simulator
- The earlier easel runs (the Before page) were made on an open-source, MIT-licensed oil-paint simulator; its colour mixing uses Mixbox (Sochorová and Jamriška, SIGGRAPH Asia 2021; CC BY-NC 4.0).
The motor
- Hands: learned drawing-hand vocabularies (Russell Parrish, Parallax Metrology). The vocabularies used here were learned from public-domain drawings by Käthe Kollwitz, Rembrandt van Rijn and Paul Cézanne.
Research this build drew on
- FRIDA: A Collaborative Robot Painter with a Differentiable, Real2Sim2Real Planning Environment (Schaldenbrand, McCann, Oh): plan, draw, look, re-plan.
- SketchAgent: Language-Driven Sequential Sketch Generation (Vinker et al.): why language models writing coordinates draw mechanically.
- CLIPasso and CLIPascene (Vinker et al.): abstraction in sketches.
- DiffSketcher (Xing et al.): text-guided vector sketching.
- Teaching an Agent to Sketch One Part at a Time (Du et al.): part-by-part sketching with visual feedback.
Sources
- Art Institute of Chicago API: public-domain collection search.
- Generators: Midjourney and ChatGPT (images made by Russell Parrish from his prompts, recorded verbatim in the ledgers).
Method
- The Visual Thinking Lens and its critic (Russell Parrish). The thumbnail-workshop method on the Method page is Russell's.
