ONE THOUSAND
TWENTY-EIGHT

A clock made of words becomes a machine for measuring where the measurements refuse to agree.
Do not resolve the contradictions.
Measure the distance between them.
The source essay counts itself, times itself, doubts its own arithmetic, compares composing with copying, and turns determiners into a suspicion about machine language. This version makes those disagreements the interface.

I · disagreement ledger

The claims do not line up. Good.

Each card preserves two measurements that appear to describe the same event but do not fully reconcile. No correction is silently chosen.
count
1028 ↔ 1025
words / tokens

A mismatch before arithmetic

The author names 1,028 words; the companion page reports 1,025 tokens. Those are not automatically the same unit. The first contradiction is therefore a counting-rule problem, not simply a three-word error.

clock
5 ≠ 6
minutes

12:48 → 12:53

The clock implies five elapsed minutes, while the prose also invokes a six-minute denominator. Both are retained.

rate
49 ≠ 29.25
wpm

317-word checkpoint

Using the visible checkpoints: (317−170)/(12:56−12:53) ≈ 49 wpm. Using the prose's local arithmetic: 117/4 = 29.25 wpm. Both the word baseline and the minute interval move.

compose / copy

Thinking is measured against transcription

The essay makes speed into an identity problem: what changes when composing approaches copying?

II · rate field

One event. Several clocks.

Black is the path implied by named clock checkpoints. Red marks rates derived from those intervals. Gold marks a rate the prose states for a specific interval, so it can be placed. The 33 and 90 speeds are regimes the essay invokes with no timestamp — drawn as lines, not points, because locating them anywhere on the clock would invent a measurement. Their separation is the evidence.

Checkpoint A
~170 @ 12:53
Five clock minutes after 12:48. The prose also calculates with a six-minute denominator. won't reconcile
Checkpoint B
317 @ 12:56
Visible checkpoint path: 170→317 in 3 minutes = 49 wpm. Prose-local arithmetic: 200→317 in 4 minutes = 29.25 wpm. Two denominators and two baselines coexist.
Checkpoint C
713 @ 1:08
Twenty clock minutes from 12:48.
Finish
1028 @ ~30 min
Average implied rate ≈34.3 wpm.

Now make your own residue.

Nothing leaves the browser. There is no composite score and no “better” — each axis is reported in its own unit, the same refusal the counting lab and price section make.

Whose 1,028?

Paste any authorized copy of the essay—or any text—below. The page intentionally offers multiple counting rules instead of pretending “word” has one universal implementation.

Whitespace counting treats each non-empty space-delimited unit as a word. Lexical counting extracts letter/number wordforms and allows internal apostrophes or hyphens. Neither is declared canonical.
V · the price of a contradiction

What must be spent to make two claims agree?

A contradiction has no universal price. Where two claims use the same unit, we can report the native gap and a symmetric relative gap. Where the units differ, arithmetic stops and the price is an additional rule.
Time contradiction
1 minute
18.2% symmetric gap

12:48→12:53 is five clock minutes; the prose invokes a six-minute denominator. Reconciliation costs one minute of explanation, correction, or changed boundary.

Rate contradiction
19.75 wpm
50.5% symmetric gap

Checkpoint arithmetic gives about 49 wpm; prose-local arithmetic gives 29.25 wpm. The larger price is not only 19.75 wpm—the account must also decide whether 170 or 200 is the starting count, and whether three or four minutes elapsed.

Counting contradiction
+ rule
not commensurable yet

1,028 words and 1,025 tokens cannot honestly be reduced to a three-unit disagreement until “word,” “token,” and the counting algorithm are made equivalent.

When units match: symmetric gap = |a−b| / ((|a|+|b|)/2).
When units do not match: do not normalize. The missing conversion or counting rule is itself part of the contradiction.
VI · resolution ledger

Coherence is not free.

The numerical gap tells you how far apart two accounts are. The resolution ledger asks a different question: what are you willing to spend to make them agree?
Contradiction is cheap.
Resolution spends something.
Choose one action for each contradiction. There is no preferred answer and no score. The page records the kind of intervention you used: change a definition, discard an observation, add an assumption, measure again, or leave the contradiction intact.
Time · 5 min ↔ 6 min
Δ 1 minute
CONDITIONAL
The accounts can be reconciled, but only after deciding which boundary or approximation governs the interval.

Reconciliation requires choosing a starting count, an elapsed interval, or treating one of the numbers as approximate.

NEEDS A RULE
The units are not yet commensurable. Before subtraction means anything, the counting rules themselves must be aligned.

VII · the ledger

A dollar is not the only thing spent.

The monetary comparison remains conjectural. Human composing time is different: it consumes elapsed life by definition.

Human word

1.76
seconds of composing life · at 34 wpm
60 seconds ÷ 34 words ≈ 1.76 seconds per word.

Machine word · essay's conjecture

≈1000×
more words per dollar · claim, not benchmark
The money comparison is speculative. The asymmetry in lived composing time is the conceptual point.
The disagreement is the event.
Coherence is what you pay for.

This page does not decide which count, clock, or rate is “correct.” It lets each instrument speak in its own units and keeps the gaps visible. The residue is not a cleaned dataset, but a record of where measuring the act changes what the act appears to be. The price of a contradiction is whatever must be added, changed, surrendered, or left unresolved before two accounts can be made coherent. Coherence is what remains after you decide what you are willing to lose.
